9 Signs You Have Roof Damage

The integrity of your home’s roofing system is crucial to your family’s safety and comfort. However, even a well-maintained roof will eventually need repair or replacement. There are definite signs to look for when you have need of roof repair. They can be seen from the ground, the interior of your home, and when your roofing inspector is up on the roof.

1. Collection of Granules

As your roof ages, the granules loosen due to time and the elements. Look in the gutter or the ground around your downspouts for granules. If your roof is heavily shedding this protective layer of your shingles it may be time for a replacement.

2. Leaky/Clogged Gutters

Leaking or clogged gutters are easy to detect. If rainwater is going over the top of the gutter rather than the downspout, you have a problem. Clogged gutters can cause thousands of dollars of siding and foundation damage.

3. Broken, Cracked, or Curling Shingles

Broken curling or cracked shingles can easily be seen from the ground. If a few shingles are cracking or curled, repairs can be made. If the damage is extensive, it may require complete replacement

4. Missing Shingles

Missing shingles should be replaced immediately. They can lead to serious structural issues including rotting wood, mold or other damage.

5. Hail Damage

If items are damaged on the ground, yard, or driveway, then your roof may be compromised as well. Look for dents in your air conditioning unit, lawn furniture, or your car if it’s parked outside. If your shrubs and other landscaping has been damaged by hail, you should call your roofer to come inspect your roof.

6. Water Damage on Walls or Ceilings

If your roof is compromised, you may see signs in your home like dark spots or discoloration. Water leakage can lead to structural damage, mold, or other problems.

7. Problems in the Attic

If mold, rotting wood, or damaged items are found in the attic you may have a hidden leak.

If you see any of these signs, call a professional to inspect your home’s roof.

8. The Extent of Shingle Damage

While some shingle damage can be easily seen from the ground, some damage is only visible to the trained eye of a professional.

9. Hidden Damage

There are some details which can only be accurately assessed from on your roof and requires a professional inspection to detect. Depending on the extent of damage, may require a roofing replacement.
